Ingredients

Main
  • 4 soft shell crabs cleaned
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Oil for frying like vegetable or peanut oil

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Paper towels
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Cooking thermometer (optional)

Method

  1. Start by cleaning the soft shell crabs under cold running water.
  2. In one bowl, combine the flour, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl and dip each crab into the buttermilk, ensuring it's fully coated.
  4. Dredge the crabs in the seasoned flour.
  5. In a skillet, heat about an inch of oil over medium-high heat until hot, ideally around 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully add the crabs to the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Transfer the crabs to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve the crabs hot, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

These soft shell crabs shine when paired with fresh, zesty sides that balance their richness.
