Method
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt until evenly mixed.
- Gradually add 3/4 cup warm water to the flour mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 10 minutes to relax the gluten.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll each portion into a 1/4-inch-thick disc on a lightly floured surface.
- Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat (around 350°F) until the oil shimmers.
- Carefully place one dough disc into the hot oil and fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fry bread to paper towels to drain excess oil, then serve warm with desired toppings.
Notes
Serve warm with sweet or savory toppings such as honey, jam, chili, or stew.
