Ingredients

Main
  • 1 pound fresh mushrooms button or cremini work well
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Frying pan or deep fryer
  • Tongs or slotted spoon
  • Paper towels for draining

Method

  1. Start by cleaning the mushrooms with a damp cloth, removing any dirt.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into a shallow dish. Dip each mushroom into the buttermilk, ensuring it's fully coated.
  4. After soaking in buttermilk, dredge the mushrooms in the flour mixture.
  5. In a frying pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully place the coated mushrooms in the hot oil, cooking in batches to avoid overcrowding for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the mushrooms from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  8. Once drained, serve the fried mushrooms hot.

Notes

Serve alongside a tangy ranch dressing or a zesty marinara sauce for an added flavor boost.
