- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat.
- Add 8 ounces spaghetti and cook for 8–10 minutes until al dente, then drain in a colander.
- Meanwhile, heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add 1 pound ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it up, until browned.
- Stir in 1 cup diced onion and 2 cloves minced garlic, cooking for 2–3 minutes until the onion is soft.
- Add 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes and 1/2 cup tomato sauce; stir and bring to a simmer.
- Season the sauce with 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, and salt and pepper to taste; simmer for 5 minutes over medium heat.
- Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce.
- Divide spaghetti among bowls and top each serving with 1/2 cup shredded cheese if desired.
Notes
For an extra kick, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce.
