Main
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 can 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauce pot
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Whisk (optional)
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Colander or strainer
  • Storage containers with lids

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 pound ground beef, breaking it into small pieces; cook for 5 to 7 minutes until browned.
  2. Drain excess grease through a colander and return the meat to the skillet.
  3. Stir in 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce and 1/2 cup water, combining thoroughly.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and 1 teaspoon ground cumin; stir constantly for 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  5. Mix in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
  6. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt, cayenne, or chili powder if desired, then simmer for 1 more minute.

Notes

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; flavors develop and deepen over time.
