Ingredients

Main
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk warmed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 packet 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon optional for filling
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar optional for filling
  • 1 cup icing sugar for glaze
  • 2 tablespoons milk for glaze

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking dish or sheet
  • Plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel
  • Oven

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warmed milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add the softened butter, sugar, eggs, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. If using, sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the dough.
  8. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
  9. Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. For the glaze, mix icing sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth and drizzle over warm rolls.

Notes

Serve warm, optionally with fruit preserves or jams.
