French Dressing

French Dressing is actually an American term for French vinaigrette which comes in many different varieties. The typical French vinaigrette is mainly salad oil, vinegar, herbs, spices and other ingredients and vastly different from the “American” French Dressing that is reddish orange in color and pureed into a creamy sauce. The French probably consider our French Dressing to be a crude American concoction but who really cares what they think?

Did you know that there is actually a place called “Hidden Valley Ranch”? In 1954 Steve and Gayle Henson opend a dude ranch in Santa Barbara and guess what they called it? One would assume that this famous dressing/dip was created at the place it was named after but it was actually made years earlier when the couple lived in Alaska.

Low Fat Homemade Mayonnaise

OK here is a recipe for Low Fat Homemade Mayonnaise. As you can see, everything that makes mayonnaise mayonnaise is gone from this recipe. The eggs and much of the oil is replaced with yougurt, cornstarch, and water.

We highly recommend you keep an open mind and at least try this recipe. You might actually like it like we do and shed a few pounds in the process.

Because of the sugar and cornstarch Miracle Whip is even worse on your waste line than regular mayonnaise. Substituting in Splenda for the powdered sugar will help a bit.

Homemade Mayonnaise

Here is how to make Homemade Mayonnaise. The question is why would anyone go through the trouble when it is so much easier just to go to the store and simply buy yourself a bottle?

Well by making your own mayo you have the flexibility to be creative. For example, substituting Sriracha for Dijon Mustard or using dry habanero mix instead of ground white pepper are nice ways to differentiate your mayo from the typical store bought stuff. For the kids, addding food coloring to your homemade mayo is an especially cool way to make a boring ham and cheese sandwich fun to eat.
