Chicken in Shoyu Sauce Dip

This recipe may seem like another shoyu chicken recipe but if you look closely it is really a fried chicken recipe with two types of shoyu dipping sauces. To be considered shoyu chicken, the chicken must first be marinated in the shoyu sauce then cooked either with or without the marinade. But to some that still does not matter and as far as they are concerned this is in fact a shoyu chicken recipe. Anyway Chicken in Shoyu Sauce Dip is a great pupu/appetizer and breeze to make.

Candlelight Wings

Candlelight Wings are essentially shoyu chicken wings. How they ever came up with the name is beyond me. Regardless of the name, Candlelight Wings taste good and are easy to make. When you think about it, that is all that really matters.

Tofu Poke

Tofu Poke is perfect for those in your family who don’t or won’t eat raw fish. It is also a great way to make bland tofu interesting to eat. We also like this recipe because it is way cheaper than having to buy fresh ahi or aku. Make sure to use firm tofu for this recipe. Yakidofu or Japanese grilled tofu can also be substituted for firm tofu.

Barbecued Chicken Thighs

We agree it is probably easier to just buy a huge bottle of barbecue sauce from Sam’s or Costco, pour it all over your chicken, then cook it up. However by doing the recipe you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you can actually cook something and are not some cooking baby always reliant on the bottle (of barbecue sauce). This recipe is dedicated to those that refuse to use barbecue sauce out of a bottle or plastic jug. For those of you too busy to care stick to the store bought stuff.

Aku Poke #2

skipjack-tuna[1]

Aku is the Hawaiian word for skip jack tuna. It has a more robust flavor than Ahi or Yellow-Fin Tuna and the flesh is darker in color. The majority of the canned tuna you see in the supermarket is probably skip jack tuna. Locals in Hawaii if given a choice prefer their aku raw.

Fishermen in Hawaii clasify aku in to three categories. Aku under 3 lbs are called Oioi. Aku over 20lbs are called Otaru and everything in between is referred to as simply aku.
Otaru make the best sashimi and nigiri sushi because of its higher fat content. Aku and Oioi are used to make poke.
